Why HexGen?

HexGen is a realistic skill-based and classless RPG system with moderately powerful cybernetic abilities. The system combines fast action resolution with deep character customization options. The basic rules are easy to pick up, but still detailed enough to cover most futuristic pursuits.

How much does it cost?

The basic rules will be free! After publishing the finished version of the ruleset, we will also be releasing reasonably priced optional modules with additional equipment, adventures, encounter maps and more!

Do the characters gain levels in HexGen?

Characters gain new Skills and Character Upgrades almost every game session, but instead of character levels HexGen has three Tiers of Play.
Tier 1 – Rookies
On the first Tier of Play the characters are still normal people who are trying to carve a bigger slice from the pie – by any means necessary. Newly created characters are Rookies. On this Tier of Play the missions are usually about raising a little bit of money to get some breathing room. The adversaries are other Rookies, maybe even friends and neighbors who are competing for the same resources. Combat encounters are usually quick affairs, with one side giving up, running away or dying after getting shot at.
  • Rookies can take 2 actions in combat and have access to Tier 1 Character Upgrades.
Tier 2 – Professionals
When the Rookies have gotten a bit of experience and maybe joined one of the many groups, clans, posses and gangs, they are ready for some bigger fish. The missions on this Tier require more planning, infiltration, use of complicated schemes and completing side missions for advantages to succeed. The characters have made a name for themselves and only the oblivious try to mess with them. At the end of this Tier the Pros probably have a nice base, vehicles and an armory of weapons and tech. Combat encounters are dangerous affairs with high powered rifles, machine guns, Trauma Packs and end up in the clinic to replace lost body parts with cybernetics.
  • Professionals can take 3 actions in combat and have access to Tier 2 Character Upgrades.
Tier 3 – Legends
When the AC decides the characters are ready for the Big Leagues, they become Legends. Legends have access to the strongest Character Upgrades and best weapons. On this Tier the mission sponsors and the opponents are big and powerful corporations or shadowy power brokers. The players need to consider their allegiances carefully. Missions require the best gear and careful planning. Combat encounters are grim and deadly with explosives, combat drones, anti-materiel rifles and even software attacks. If the characters survive this Tier of Play, they may become the next superpower and change the city in a way that suits their needs. They will become the faces your next characters see plastered on the walls and screens of your megapolis.
  • Legends can take up to 4 actions in combat and have access to Tier 3 Character Upgrades.
